Oh Boy, it's Fire Cracker Day!

Actually, it's Victoria Day, an annual holiday in Canada begun in 1911 to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria...but for boys it's Fire Cracker day.

Oh Boy, it's Fire Cracker Day!

when I was a boy it always rained on Victoria Day
and spoiled the fun we had planned
to celebrate a thing we didn't understand
could care less about, really

today was a day when it was okay for you
to do real fun stuff you can't usually do
like set fire to things that explode
set off shooting stars in the middle of the road

light a string of crackers and throw em at your sisters
watch the dog sniff the embers and burn his whiskers
and, of course this wasn't all just fun
we had serious science experiments to run
like,
what happens to the phone book when you light a Cannon in it?
will a Cannon in a pile of doggy do, send all that shit
up or down or sideways?
oh, those were such golden days!

but, it always rained on fire cracker day
when boys were forgiven for crimes of play
so the next day...
we'd trade duds at school for double bubble
and spend the rest of the week, gettin' in trouble
